Shadowjack. You guys overthink things. 10W-40 has been the common recommended oil weight in most vehicles for decades. Many decades. 10W-30 has been superceding it because the (slightly) lighter summer number is (slightly) better for fuel mileage. That's the only reason the change was made. The difference between 10W30 and 10W40 motor oils lies in their viscosity at high temperatures (100°C or 212°F), as indicated by the second number in their ratings.
